Influenced by His Father’s Work

John’s passion for building began at a young age, influenced by his father’s work in manufacturing. Showing a keen interest in craftsmanship, John received a DeWalt Radial Arm Saw for Christmas during his freshman year of high school in 1975. This gift sparked his love for creating, and he began making furniture to earn money throughout high school. To this day, the radial saw remains in his shop, a constant reminder of where his journey began.

At one point, John even dreamed of running away to Switzerland to become a cabinet maker, but his father encouraged him to pursue a college education, which laid the foundation for his future in construction.

Engerman Contracting: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation

The story of Engerman Contracting began with founder John Engerman’s passion for building, sparked during his high school years when his father gifted him a DeWalt Radial Arm Saw. This ignited John’s love for woodworking, leading him to craft furniture and take on building projects while still in school.

In 1979, John moved to Lake Geneva full-time, and by 1981, he began building projects for a Chicago client under the name Wood Doctors. Operating throughout southern Wisconsin and the Chicago metropolitan area, he honed his skills and gained valuable experience as an independent building contractor.

John pursued formal education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Light Building Construction with a focus on Construction Supervision and a minor in Business Administration. His education solidified his technical expertise and business acumen, allowing him to launch Engerman Contracting, Inc., in Wisconsin shortly after graduation.

From those early days of crafting furniture to developing iconic properties like Woodstone Prairie, John’s commitment to quality, innovation, and community has defined the legacy of Engerman Contracting.

This gives them a unique advantage when building custom homes. You’ll often find John’s handcrafted pieces in his custom home builds and remodels, including fireplace mantels, bar tops, doors, staircases, railings, decorative ceiling beams, and built-in shelving and bookcases.

The Genesis of Woodstone Prairie

John purchased the 93-acre farm that would become Woodstone Prairie in 2004. The property, formerly owned by Jerry Millette, held historical significance and a rustic charm that resonated with John’s vision. The decision to develop Woodstone Prairie was driven by John’s desire to preserve the area’s historical and architectural integrity while avoiding the mass-produced, low-quality developments he referred to as “Vinyl Ville.”

During the mid-2000s real estate boom, John was approached by the landowner, who preferred selling to him rather than large-scale developers from Illinois. John saw an opportunity to create a conservation-focused community that would celebrate the area’s natural beauty and historical roots. Partnering with Mike Keith, John navigated challenges such as the 2008 financial crisis, which significantly slowed the housing market. Despite financial pressures, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the project’s original vision, resisting offers to sell out to larger developers.

Vision and Philosophy for Woodstone Prairie

Woodstone Prairie was designed with an emphasis on community, conservation, and architectural harmony. John aimed to create a neighborhood with distinct character, avoiding cookie-cutter designs and ensuring each home complemented the overall aesthetic. His attention to detail extended to the preservation of natural elements and historical narratives tied to the land, receiving support and accolades from the Walworth County Board for the thoughtful planning behind the development.

John’s passion for unique architectural styles and his commitment to responsible development defined Woodstone Prairie as a community of lasting value. His focus on quality craftsmanship and historical respect continues to influence his work and the reputation of Engerman Contracting.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
