PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Transform a historic Girl Scout camp on Pleasant Lake into a 6,000 sq. ft. luxury private estate that preserves the property’s rustic charm while incorporating modern design, custom spaces, and sustainable, energy-efficient features. Key elements include reusing the existing stone fireplaces; a two-sided fireplace connecting the great room and master suite, a two-story great room with clerestory windows, a golf simulator room, living space over the garage accessible from the mudroom, and a grilling porch, all thoughtfully designed to enhance both function and style.

Design Approach: Heritage Meets Innovation

Engerman Contracting was honored to be part of the transformation of a beloved former Girl Scout camp into a breathtaking private residence on the shores of Pleasant Lake in East Troy, Wisconsin. Located just outside of Elkhorn in LaGrange, this 112-acre property offered the rare opportunity to preserve the historic camp feel while introducing luxury lakefront living.

Our team approached this project with deep respect for the legacy of the land and the memories rooted in its past. The goal: to preserve the natural beauty of the setting while completely reimagining its function as a luxury private estate.

The new 6,000-square-foot residence was inspired by a previous Engerman custom home that the owners loved, incorporating enhancements and new spaces that reflected their “wish list” for this second build.

At the heart of the design is the original stone fireplace in the main living room and primary suite. This iconic feature was carefully preserved and restored, now standing as bold focal points that honors the lodge’s rustic origins while anchoring the new, modern interior.

Other standout features include a two-story great room with clerestory windows, a grilling porch for year-round entertaining, and a loft designed as a private mother-in-law suite. The lower level includes a golf simulator and bar area, while a loggia connects the main residence to the garage, with access to the finished living space above.

What was once a summer retreat for campers has been thoughtfully reinvented into a year-round haven that captures the essence of Pleasant Lake’s natural charm.
